Summer, Celebrations, and Books

Jul 02, 2024 by Gayle M Irwin

The arrival of July often brings a variety of summertime celebrations, including family and class reunions. Graduations have often taken place, and weddings seem to abound.

July also brings national holidays. Canada Day took place July 1, and Americans, including me celebrate our country's independence on July 4. Such holidays bring fireworks, picnics, outings to waterways such as lakes, and camping in national forests. Vacationers travel by plane, train, and automobile, going to destinations of warmth like the Caribbean or to cooler climates, such as Iceland.

There are numerous legitimate monthly, weekly, and daily holidays, and then there are humorous, unbelievable ones. BrownieLocks.com is a fun website to see what the various 'holidays' are, and these are often linked to the establishment of such celebrations.

For example, July is known as National Ice Cream MonthNational Hotdog MonthNational Grilling MonthNational Picnic Month and National Parks and Recreation Month. July is also known for Air Conditioning Appreciation Days and Dog Days of Summer.

According to the Farmer's Almanac, the Dog Days of Summer "refers to a period of particularly hot and humid weather occurring during the summer months of July and August in the Northern Hemisphere." This time of year coincides with the rising of Sirius, the Dog Star.

Blueberriesbaked beans, and watermelons are also celebrated. Lots and lots of food honored during this month! And what pairs well with food? With summer and celebrations? BOOKS!

Do you have special plans for this month? How about reading some books, for yourself or reading to your kids ... or your kids reading some special books themselves? My authorship includes nonfiction, adult sweet romance fiction, and children’s books. I consider my stories uplifting, encouraging, and educational. Whether you’re inspired to deepen your faith with Devotions for Dog Lovers: Paws-ing for Time With God, get lost in the setting, characters and stories from my Pet Rescue Sweet Romance books, or teach the young readers in your life about kindness, friendship, joy, or nature, you’ll likely find one (or more!) of my books a great read this summer.
