Celebrating Rescue Animals and Books – Clear the Shelters and National Book Lovers Day

August arrived just a few days ago, and along with the new month comes the Dog Days of Summer. July and August in the Northern Hemisphere bring some of the hottest days of the year, and with those hot days come ice cream, picnics in the shade, and air conditioners set on HIGH.

With August’s arrival also come plans for back-to-school and special days like National Book Lovers Day, a time to celebrate books, readers, and authors. We read to learn. We read to be entertained, to escape the daily routine. Books take us on adventures, remind us love does exist, and introduce us to new places and cultures. Books educate, inspire, and entertain.

This month also brings the annual Clear the Shelters endeavor, an initiative to help pets in America’s animal shelters and rescues find homes. This year marks the 10th year of this special event, recognizing pets need kind, loving, compassionate and committed people to give them a forever home. More than 3 million dogs and 3 million cats enter shelters and rescues every year in the United States, and only about half come back out. Lives are saved through foster and adoption, and people are needed to save those lives.

In honor of National Book Lovers Day and Clear the Shelters Month, I’ve discounted two of my sweet pet rescue romance books (in e-book format). Rescue Road is the first novel in my Pet Rescue Romance – Yellowstone Country series; the book is set in southwestern Montana near Yellowstone National Park. The story introduces Rhiann and Levi and starts their love story amid towering mountains and grand valleys surrounding the fictional town of Colter, Montana. Love Takes Flight also takes place in Montana, set in the western park of state south of Glacier National Park. This stand-alone story brings together Ellie and Nathan in the backdrop of a family farm and nearby wildlife refuge. Sandhill cranes are part of the story; cranes mate for life and make a delightful correlation with a human happily-ever-after.

I donate a percentage of all book sales to various animal shelters and rescue organizations. Buy a book (or two!) and help a pet in need!

National Book Lovers Day and Clear the Shelters happen during the Dog Days of Summer, taking place every August. So, enjoy a book or two during these latter Dog Days of Summer and do what you can to help animal rescues and shelters, whether that is fostering, adopting, volunteering, or donating (funds as well as food and materials). The animals need us … and we need them, for companionship and better physical and emotional health, among other reasons.

Happy National Book Lovers Day and Happy Dog Days of Summer! Let’s do what we can to Clear the Shelters this year!
